These cookies are great if you want to increase or maintain your milk supply as a breastfeeding mother! I can personally say that they have helped me in my journey from breastfeeding to exclusively breast pumping! I had a dip in my milk supply when my daughter couldn’t breastfeed as she had a tongue tie. These yummy cookies are my guilty but necessary pleasure! Let’s be honest, breastfeeding makes you hungry! Why not treat yourself with a snack that not only satisfies your crazy cravings but also helps your milk supply?!
The all important ingredients to boost your milk supply are the oats, brewer’s yeast and flax seeds, so definitely keep those in.
You can also bake these cookies and gift them to a new mum, which I have done in the past, and it’s definitely well received! I mean, who doesn’t like cookies? Anyone can eat them as well, as the taste isn’t much different than any other oatmeal cookie!
Tip! I use an ice cream scoop to form balls of the cookie dough. This will create cookies that are all the same size and shape, visually ofcourse a lot more appealing. My ice cream scoop holds about 2 tablespoons, this makes a medium sized cookie.
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies
- 1 cup butter unsalted
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 tbsp peanut butter
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp flax seed
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 cups plain flour
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1/4 cup brewer's yeast
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1-2 cups chocolate chips
Preheat oven to gas mark 3
Mix together the flax seed and water and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Cream together butter and sugars.
Stir in the peanut butter, vanilla extract, eggs and flax seed mixture.
Combine the flour, oats, brewer's yeast, baking soda and salt, and stir into the batter.
Mix in the chocolate chips.
Drop tablespoons onto a lightly greased baking sheet.
Bake for 15 minutes, until edges start to brown.
Let it cool for atleast 5 minutes before transferring to a plate.
If you'd like to make this recipe a little healthier for whatever reason, you can substitute some of the ingredients:
- plain flour = wholewheat flour
- 1 cup butter = 1/2 cup coconut oil + 1/2 cup butter
- chocolate chips = dark
You can omit the peanut butter if you like, it is not an essential.
I use a 1:1 ratio for the flour and oats, meaning equal amounts. However, many lactation cookie recipes use 2 cups flour and 3 cups of oats. I find that it makes the cookies rather dry, and prefer it this way. If you really want to up your milk supply, I would definitely recommend going for the latter.
